How to check if a degree certificate is genuine
If you have doubts about your own certificate, or a candidate’s, here is what actually works, and what does not.
Warning signs to take seriously
- A degree completed in “one sitting”, or in much less time than the normal course length
- No classes, no exams at a real centre, or exams written at home
- A certificate delivered by an agent rather than the university
- A backdated degree, or a year of passing that does not match when you actually studied
- A university in another state that you never visited, offering a regular (not distance) degree
- An agent who says it is “verified online” through a website the agent controls
What does not prove a degree is genuine
- A recognised university name. Fake certificates often use real university names.
- A website or QR code supplied by the agent. Anyone can build a look-alike site.
- Attestation stamps obtained without checking the university’s records.
What does prove it
A confirmation from the university’s own examination or registrar section, obtained independently. That is exactly what FACTS does through written verification, RTI or an in-person visit.

How can I check if my degree is genuine?
Only the university that issued it can confirm this. Ask FACTS to verify it with the university: we obtain its written or official reply and report the result as Green, Red or Orange.
Is checking the UGC website enough?
No. The UGC list tells you whether a university is recognised. It does not tell you whether a particular certificate was really issued by that university.
Will you report me if my certificate is fake?
We keep your case confidential and only report the result to you, or to the person you have authorised. Our job is to tell you what the university's records show.
What should I do if the result is Red?
Do not use the certificate. Speak to a lawyer about your options against whoever sold or arranged it. Many people in this situation were misled by an agent or study centre.
